April Competition: Portraits

To celebrate the launch of Demotix’ splendid new and improved individual image captioning and tagging system, our competition this month is focused on the art of portrait photography. Capturing the perfect portrait Photograph is a skill that many photographers aspire to as a way of capturing emotions, nuances, peculiarities, candour and personalities.

Send us your portrait pictures of Politicians, Sportsmen and women, entertainers, celebrities and prominent figures within business and industry. With our new tagging system in place, your portraits will have even greater visibility on our site and you might just capture the picture of a well known individual that will be used or referenced time and again.

This is also the perfect opportunity to remind you that our holographic ‘Demotix press pass' is available to Demotix contributors that meet the criteria. Email info@demotix.com for further information.

HOW TO ENTER

It’s incredibly simple to enter this competition. Upload your photos as normal but remember to tag them as “Portrait competition”. Every tagged portrait photo uploaded in April will be considered for the monthly prizes.

The closing date is 30th April 2010 so start snapping now to get your entries in.

APRIL’S JUDGE

We are delighted to announce that this month’s judge will be Paul Sanders, the Picture Editor for The Times, UK. Paul has been the Picture Editor at The Times for over 5 years so has a wealth of experience in not only choosing the right portrait picture but, as an avid photographer himself, knowledge about the challenges faced in getting the perfect portrait. We’re glad to have Paul on board for this month’s competition to cast his expert eye over your entries.

THE PRIZES

First Place: the opportunity to turn your photojournalism into a beautiful coffee-table book. Blurb, custom book publishers for the masses, will allow the winner to produce and customize their own bookstore-quality book or books, up to the value of £50.

Teresa Pereira, Senior Director at Blurb UK, said: “In an age of citizen journalism and new media, Demotix is streamlining content to help tell stories that are too often overlooked, but affect all of us. Flipping the news gathering process on its head, Demotix is giving everyone a voice and platform on which to be heard. Providing that open platform is at the heart of Blurb's foundation and we hope that through books, these stories can continue to live on.”

Runners up will also be able to have their work printed - this time by Moo, the stunning card printers.

Second Place will receive 60 postcards of their best work, beautifully printed onto glossy stock.

All winners will be featured on the Demotix blog and promoted intensively to photo editors and creatives worldwide.
