January's Viewfinder Competition Winners

The results of the Viewfinder competition for 'Our World' are in - and we have winners from Ukraine and India.

Your entries were judged by Mark Murrmann currently works as Photo Editor at Mother Jones magazine in San Francisco, CA.

January's outright winner was Chernobyl, one generation after the 1986 accident by Michael Forster Rothbart.

Mark said "I chose this as the winner simply because it is the one I could see Mother Jones most likely running."

This story was Michael Forster Rothbart's photographic essay of the continuing effects of the Chernobyl disaster, taken over a period of two years winning him a beautiful coffee-table book of his work, thanks to Blurb, custom book publishers for the masses.

Second place went to World Leprosy Week from India by Colin Summers.

Mark described it as "a haunting, but beautiful body of work."

Third place this month when to Total Solar Eclipse in Varnasi also shot in India. Congratulations to P Waltz from Japan who takes away cards from Moo.

Praising the story Mark remarked: "A well shot and generally nicely edited body of work. The toning of the images works well for this story tool, very strong in terms of eliciting a more emotional response to the images. The mix of shots — close-ups, distant shots, wide angle -- works to help give context to where we are, how many people are there, as well as bringing the reader into the river and on the riverbank with the people. The eclipse photos are a nice touch. Overall very well done."
Well done to the winners, and everyone who entered. You can browse through more stories on the Our World page.
