FTP Upload

We know how important it is to our contributors that the upload system to the website is as simple and painless as possible, and that the current system is particularly difficult to use with a large number of high-resolution images. That's why we have put all our energy recently into developing a way of using File-Transfer Protocol, or FTP, to upload photos to Demotix.

FTP is a quick and easy way to upload lots of photos at once to Demotix. Here's how to use it.

First, Demotix needs to know that the photo’s you will be adding to the FTP belong to you. We give you a unique code to use - to get yours, go to the FTP tab in your Settings.

You can now use your FTP client to get your photos to Demotix. It’s really easy.

  1. You will need some FTP software. Filezilla is free - download it here.

  2. Find your photos and add them to a folder with the name as your code on your computer.

  3. Use your software to log into the Demotix server. The host address is uploads.demotix.com and you should log in anonymously. If you are using Filezilla, enter the number in this box and click QuickConnect.

  4. You can now drag and drop your folder into the Photos directory, or navigate to the folder with the software and select upload.

  5. That’s it! The system will process your images (it will take a maximum of 4 minutes), your photos will appear in your Existing Images folder. To create your story, click Upload Story as normal, click Existing Images, then select the photos. Fill in your description as normal and hit Submit.

As always, we are listening, so if you have any comments or queries, please be in touch. In the meantime, we will continue to look at ways to improve the upload process, such as redesigning the web form (no more pop-up uploader) and allowing FTP upload cutting out the browser altogether.

When I tried to load photos using FTP over night or during the day but left my computer alone not all my photos were uploaded. It seems that the FTP stops when the PC hibernates; I'm using Vista home. Last night I uploaded the story San Isidro Fiesta, using the web based interface; one browser page, 11 tabs, 53 photos. They were all uploaded by the time I woke up this morning. Old technology might still be useful after all!

Thanks so much for testing this for us guys. We'll be watching this like a hawk...

Just uploaded five small images, after about 30 seconds, was able to see them in the 'existing images' of a new story and in the 'manage images' section of my setting page. I was using SmartFTP, running XP SP3. I have now deleted the images from my 'manage' section and they have now been removed from my ftp folder. All seems fine. Famous last words, I will use the ftp in anger later this week maybe. Maybe it's just Macs :D hehe that would be soooo sweet! :p

I'm on a Mac. OSX 10.5.6 and I used Fetch to upload. But that shouldn't matter using another FTP app. I used the code provided to name my folder of pics and then I did indeed place it within the photos folder on FTP. Oh, and I was wearing jeans and bright pink sombrero at the time.

Hi all - we have done a tonne of testing and it works for us every time. This isn't very helpful I know, but it would be hugely useful if you could tell us if you still have this problem and any information (OS, software used, wind direction!) so we can get to the bottom of this. Just to reemphasize, you should be placing your folder names as your code inside the folder marked photos. Thanks all for your time.
