Demotix and Storyful announce citizen news channel

Two of the leading forces in social journalism have joined forces to create an unique real-time newswire.

Demotix has been a pioneer in the curation of user-generated photos and video and the promotion of citizen journalism. Storyful is the first news agency purpose-built for the social media age. Together, they have created a news channel that will deliver a stream high-value and rights-cleared images and video to news organisations.

Demotix will now deliver its content through a dedicated channel on the StoryfulPro platform, which is used by some of the world's leading media organisations, including YouTube, ABC News and the New York Times. Clients will now have the ability to source from a comprehensive real-time feed of content, discovered and verified by Storyful alongside rights-cleared imagery from the Demotix network.

"This new channel meets the great challenge facing journalists in a social age," said Storyful CEO Mark Little, "how can we find user-generated content that we can trust and safely use in our stories?". Turi Munthe, CEO of Demotix said: "By combining Storyful's discovery and verification system with the vast reach of the Demotix network, we can offer a valuable commercial connection between the most authentic and compelling content creators and the most forward-thinking newsrooms."

Hey everyone, apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

- Storyful, as you know, has hitherto only worked with video. They showcase the social web to their clients - Al-Jazeera, CNN, etc...
Exactly the same thing will happen with our breaking image feed. If clients want any of the images, they'll come to us. No slicing up fees. 50/50 as ever.

- Demotix, on the other hand, will be working with Storyful to pick up the best of the video web that they find, to licence onto our clients.

Hope that clarifies!

I too would like to see more details. My understanding of Storyful was that contributors of images did not get any money even if those images were published.

So me-thinks. Could we have a more detailed explanation how this will benifit us financially (or not) ??

The Camera is a tool that enables us to see the light but it will always be blind without our minds and imagination.
People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they don't know when to quit.

The following tips are based on commonly accepted editorial values adopted by most mainstream media.

Visual journalists operate as trustees of the public. Our primary role is to report visually on the significant events and varied viewpoints in our common world. Our primary goal is the faithful and comprehensive depiction of the subject at hand. As visual journalists, we have the responsibility to document society and to preserve its history through images.

On our Editorial ethics for photojournalists page we have put together a list commonly accepted editorial values adopted by most mainstream media.
