Demotix has hit its first million images!

We still can’t get anyone to pronounce our name properly, and still can’t seem to settle down (office number 9), but 4 yrs after launching in January 2009, we’ve come a long way.

What started as a simple idea – to create a safe platform for free speech that doubled as a new wire-service for the news – has grown up. We’re not quite adults yet, but reckon we’ve hit bolshy adolescence.

Last week, we broke 75,000 stories.
Today, we broke a million images.

From our first front page (thank you, Guardian) to breaking the Oslo bombings, reporting on street fights :) in Tehran, and sharing England’s true moment of glory at the Euros 2012, we’ve come a long way.

We owe an enormous debt of gratidude to 2 groups of people:
1. All the photographers and reporters (34,000 and counting) all around the world (we reckon we’re in over 200 territories and countries) who put their trust in us to share their stories with the world.
2. All the picture editors, journalists and distributors who took a chance with a scrappy little start-up with a mission.
Without you both, nothing…

We’re humbled and proud of what we have achieved together, and immensely grateful for your ongoing support.

On to the next million, and hasta la revolución siempre!

The following tips are based on commonly accepted editorial values adopted by most mainstream media.

Visual journalists operate as trustees of the public. Our primary role is to report visually on the significant events and varied viewpoints in our common world. Our primary goal is the faithful and comprehensive depiction of the subject at hand. As visual journalists, we have the responsibility to document society and to preserve its history through images.

On our Editorial ethics for photojournalists page we have put together a list commonly accepted editorial values adopted by most mainstream media.
