Hi, the hardest thing I find at the moment is finding storiers to cover (in London/Europe), does anyone have any recommendations, the calendars on Demotix (team pages) don't seem to have to much info, any info most appreciated!!

What I do regardless of the region I am in to find stories is the following:

1. Read the major newspapers. There are always leads on stories in them.
2. Listen to news oriented radio stations, breaking news on TV, police radio or make friends with police man and fire man
3. Look at calendars of big event organizers and figure out when what stars are going to be in town, call the organizer and ask if there are any press conferences scheduled

Just a few ideas. Hope that helps.

If you tell me what type of news you are interested in I can give you some specific information.

Best,
Ingmar

We're looking to radically change the way calendars work on Demotix, plus developing new ideas such as an regular email update on upcoming events. In the meantime - keep sharing your ideas on the forum.

One thing I think amateur journalists forget is that your hometown is an exotic location for somebody in the world. Therefore, just go out and find something unique to shoot and report on.
For example, I just uploaded a story "America's Dead Sea" this afternoon and a trip to a local area turned into an environmental story.
In other words, on "slow news" days think locally. It takes some creativity but that's what journalism is all about.
Find someone, something, to write about and teach yourself to be aware.

Poverty, drug addiction, homelessness, junkies, rabid dogs, gypsies, immigration, emigration, unemployment, sickness, prostitution, exploitation, ethnic tensions, ethical issues, fall of faith, rich vs poors, middle-class crisis, gambling, desperates, drug busts, etc etc

These are just the typical subjects in photojournalism, or at least they're the ones i would like to focus in my local town before or later.

for me- i got the privileged working with the local media, so finding story is not a big problem, but like @Marco said.. those are very good topics, but one should catch hold of your dailies everyday, make sure you go through each and every page of your dailies. Another thing is make lots of friend with local reporters of your area.

thank you
