How do I sell my photos?

First of all I want to admit, I am not really a prolific contributor to Demotix, but really get demoralised about the lack of sales. Don't get me wrong, I am not expecting everyone to buy my photos/stories, first of all that would be unfair.

Do I get in contact with news/picture editors to see if they are interested?

Richard,
There seem to be a few key things we all need to do.

1, Shoot great photos of Current News Worthy events - (half a dozen will do if you are in a rush)
2, Key wording is VITAL. Try to do at least 70+ relevant key words.
3, Captions to explain Exactly what the story is, who is in it etc you got 250 letters per photo so use them.
4, Upload as soon as it happens - don't wait an hour - time is critical
5, Last but not least - Upload as soon as possible - time is critical

Also use things like Twitter, facebook and any other social media to post links all over - and use KEYWORDS so people can find your story.
There is a good test as to the effectivness of your key words - search for your story on Google - did it show up on page 1?
Keep trying and do what you do for the love of it.
Smile

Where are you based? I get a big red X when I try and look at your profile Sad
The answer is simplels you ring the picture editors of the relevant rags and talk them into buying.
this pre supposes you have the images and a laptop with a good wi-fi link.
For most News stories you have to deliver in minutes or they send one of their one people.
All you need is the right phone numbers.
In the UK Try the BFP and get their hand book

Hi,
I am still getting the Red X and "Your account does not have the permission to access this page. If you just signed up, please make sure you clicked the link in your welcome email"

You can usually pick up the BFP handbook at Focus without being a member,. It is about 14GBP. It has the contact details for *EVERY* UK magazine and newspaper. So it will more than pay for itself on they first sale. As I said a recently some of us do many other things apart from Demotix.

see

However... it is hard work, time consuming etc. This is why people use agencies in the first place.
