Images of people with cross eyes in photos

Hello everyone,

In my photo call photos I keep getting a good number of photos with people who seem to be cross eyed. As far as I know these people are not cross eyed. I do know that children are more susceptible to appear with cross eyes but I am only referring to adults here. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that many good photos are ruined because of the crossed eyes. I personally won't publish such photo unless it was a very special case; and I cannot even imagine what that might be.

Although I use a flash, it does not matter whether I use it directly, use a diffuser, bounce it or whatever. However, I never pose people, impossible to do during a photo call and never do it anyway; the images I have when people are seen to pose is because they did it without any prompt from me. This point might be relevant because the people are not necessarily prepared for the flash to go off. I do sometimes, call out with the other photographers for the person to look in my direction; it does not work my voice does not carry. And when they do look my way it is because they are looking my way. And I still have the problem even when I happen to be the only photographer around or maybe one of two or three photographers.

Is this natural? Do you have the same problem? How do you deal with it? Any ideas?

best

Lawrence

Unless the subject is intentionally doing it, I've never had people looking cross eyed because of how I chose to shoot the picture, in any situation. I've had plenty looking away, but no one looking cross eyed (both their eyes looking at their nose).

Steve there is no question of people doing it intentionally. I'll try to find some images and put them on my blog. The eyes only and as long as I can find images that do not identify the person. ITMT thanks for your feedback.

Hi everyone, I haven't been able to find a suitable photo I can use to illustrate the issue; not yet anyway. I will also ask around for opinions. A look at a recent photo the cross eye "phenomenon" is certainly present and confirmed by another person. I am beginning to think that maybe it is because the images with the phenomenon do have the subject looking at an angle, whether slight or not. So maybe it could be a visual effect because of the way we see faces, rather than the subject having the said eye problem. Looking at photos which did not have the phenomenon looked like mug shots taken in some police station in a seedy area. Will come back if I find more info.

Hello Lawrence,

in fact I didn´t state such a phenomenon at my pictures. I had only one time a little bit a problem, not to point out the sight at a wellknown person, who suffers in reality from this issue.

Another problem I sometimes get involved, is to take portraits of people wearing strong glasses and seeing part of their faces "cut out". Very annoying, if I cann´t change my place.
