Dear community,
We are pleased to announce that we have three brand new upload systems on Demotix! :)
You have all been heroically patient - we hope you won't be disappointed.
A huge thank you to our Beta testers who have helped ensure the systems are bullet proof, and our help sections make sense (any suggestions for improvements, please be in touch!)
We now have:
A fully re-designed FTP system.
No more token system. Now, you can login directly with your username and upload code. Learn more about the new FTP system.
A simple Email/Mobile upload system.
When the going gets tough - urgent stories, network limitations, bandwidth nightmares... - there's a simple email upload system. And it also works for mobiles, of course: you can directly send your pictures from any smartphone. Learn more about the new email system.
And finally...
A delicious desktop uploader.
The must-have tool for all Demotix reporters!
ight and simple, send us your pictures directly from your computer, no matter which operating system you run. OR carry it on an USB memory flash to use it in crowded press rooms. Learn more about the new desktop uploader.
We owe all of you an enormous debt of gratitude. Everything we've incorporated is a result of your feedback. We hope you'll feel we've been listening.
Here's looking forward to more of your amazing work. I hope we've made it easier, and more fun to share.
The Demotix Team.

You really BLOW ME OUT with the new Desktop Uploader. In Mac works like a charm!!
That's what I am talking about it, you did it DEMOTIX!! Congratulations
The upload system will take info from IPTC automatically ? So it will add captions automatically
Cheers!

Glad you like it Juan.
Yes, photos are currently tagged with any IPTC keyword data you embed into them, as well as any tags put onto the story.
This means photo buyers can search these per photo IPTC tags when searching for images, but you cant see them on the story.

Email works fantastic!!
New workflow for photo-journalistic emergencies:
1) Shoot Canon G10 with MicroSD in SD adapter, JPG M1 (~9MB per image, ~3MB each filesize).
2) Insert MicroSD without adapter into Nokia E90 or similar.
3) Create email to Demotix with attachments. Take Andy up on his suggestion; "If your images are extremely important, please also send details and your username to info@demotix.com".
4) Send email using 3G UMTS (one email with 3 attachments, total 10MB, took exactly 6 minutes).
Andy, will info@demotix.com create the new story for me if I do not have access to Demotix/Internet and I ask them to do so in the email?
Very cool!! Now all I need to do is find some 'photo-journalistic emergencies'
Nuno, will the FTP work well now with big files?
Thank you guys!

I can't find enough ways to describe to you all how happy I am with the new Desktop Uploader. Tried it for the first time this morning and it worked perfectly.
For those of us with sometimes dodgy internet connections, this is going to make a huge difference.
I have a copy on my USB drive already - Now that was a good idea guys!
About to try an upload from my iPhone and will let you know...
Nuno I love your new Avatar!
Thanks to everyone who has worked hard on these upload systems...we all really appreciate your hard work
Best from Bangkok,

Thank you all for your kind comments. I hope you'll enjoy the new upload experience!
@Nir-Atlon FTP and Desktop uploaders support large files, as soon as they are jpeg. Excellent tip for the images transfer. The best way to do it is sending the images to your own Demotix inbox (with the format username-uploadcode@upload.demotix.com). Then send the story to info@demotix.com with reference to your username. I would recommend to put URGENT or BREAKING NEWS as title.
@forestmat Thanks, some people think it's evil. :)

Used the uploader: wonderful luxury, great app.

I hate to be critical because I really do love what Demotix is doing, but I really think Demotix has totally missed the point with the desktop uploader.
Simply put, the desktop uploader NEEDS to be an OFFLINE tool.
The desktop uploader should be an offline tool where you can construct your whole story, add your photos, tags etc, save it and when your ready hit the send button, this should also allow you to write your story while the photos are uploading.
@teamsojourner - thank you for sharing your thoughts. As you know, we are keeping on improving our essential tools in Demotix. Our Desktop Uploader is the very first version of what we want to be a portable editing suite where you can prepare your story and upload it as a whole to Demotix. As you understand, to build such a tool we need time and resources, so we have to build it step by step. However, we couldn't be developing something in one-go without releasing the working bits to the community. Why? the uploader feature is more than essential, and we encourage our members to give input like you did to ensure we develop everything the right way. Thank you again for your feedback, we hope you keep enjoying to upload to Demotix.

teamsojourner makes a very interesting suggestion, but do not see an urgent need to have text and photos prepared together. I mean, if you can send photos you can log on to the web and file the story the usual way. And if things are urgent there is always the email option.
What would be interesting to find out is whether these impressive changes on the technology side have also helped change the workflow in the sales and marketing department. For example, stories filed quicker and maybe clients have access to images sooner?
All the best

Cool idea but I can not get the desktop uploader to work at all. It won't log me in.
**EDIT** - Well now it is working. I guess I spoke too soon....Story of my life I am telling you.
Yup, loving the new Desktop Uploader, pretty cool!

Me too!
Two of twenty images uploaded twice via desktop uploader are there, in Manage Images, but unavailable for use.
Tried sending them by email ... let's see what happens.

I think I'll have to try the same, I just woke up after staying late trying to upload them, it's been 6 hours and the images are there but can't use them, they don't show. If someone could at least sort that out server side (as the images are there) that would be much appreciated.

Same here. I've uploaded it faster than usual, they do appear in the Manage area after at least 40m but they do not show in Upload Story/Existing Images...

Hi all,
Thank you for letting us know about this issue. Apologies for any inconveniance. We found out the reason of the break and are currently working on it. No files should be lost, please check your existing images tab, on your settings page.

Hi Nuno,
If it helps i'm using Windows XP, uploaded through Filezilla. My upload code has only 4 characters and i've uploaded 26 images that represents 115Mb.
Best and obrigado.

@nunoveloso thanks for the feedback, I'm sure you guys have a million things to do so thanks for some clarification, looking forward to later releases!!!
@lawmoment thanks also for your comments, I do however feel a sense of urgency regarding the method of prep (being able to prepare text, photos, tags etc togeather) the 5 storys that I have uploaded have been from the field and having to stay connected to the net can be sometimes frustrating esp. the web interface for uploading the text/story, there is no save function which can leave you open to connectivity dropouts and as was the case for me on Friday when my battery died I had to find a power outlet and start again.
Also on friday I have some good and bad feedback regarding the desktop uploader, unfortunatly the bad news first, after about 20 mins only 3 out of 12 photos uploaded so had to revert back to FTP, however all the photos I uploaded using the uploader (and FTP) rendered on the Demotix server very fast.
Thanks guys, you were on the ball, sorted, managed to upload my story today
.
Teamsojourner, what I normally do is I right my story and tags on a word document and copy and paste for that reason.
Thank once again!

Thanks a lot for the Desktop Uploader. I am also on OSX and it works great. I was quite discourage before to contribute regularly because of the technical difficulties but now I am excited to jump on the train again. Thanks again!
Actually I don't mind that uploading is separate from creating the story. While I upload I write all the other stuff in a text document and just copy and paste it once the upload is complete.
I would <3 to either email or use the Desktop Uploader to submit my stories, but in Firefox/Safari/Chrome my 'Upload Code' does not appear anywhere on the page. I've cleared cache in all 3 browsers and this didn't seem to fix it. Recommendations or suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Nyc
@NycLabrets...try writing your own code. I use an 8 figure number which works great.
