Re key words I note from the spec of the new Nikon D4 pro camera (launched 6th Jan 2012) they have this:-
"Also, IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) data can be automatically added to the images within the camera. In addition to input with a camera, it is possible to add information to a series of images at high speed using an IPTC file created on a PC in advance."
Now that should give you some idea of the importance of keywords for press photography. It takes a LOT of engineering work to add a feature like that. They would not have done it if there was not a need for it. This camera is aimed at the press photographer.
In short if you are not going to keyword the images properly there is no point in uploading them.
In professional tog's forum 20 (relevant) keywords was considered the norm. This is photojournalism not photography. If you want to do photography go to flikr.

There is also a plug in for photoshop (from the IPTC) but Lightroom and Photo Mechanic have it built in as standard.

CS5 has IPTC functions, including Import and Export, built in.
I wonder if this kind of statements serve any purpose, though: "This is photojournalism not photography. If you want to do photography go to flikr."
I think each and any person uploading here are at least aiming to become PJs, I think a statement like "things are like this, else you can go where the amateurs go" doesn't help anyone, and believe me, doesn't help your image either...

D4 is a little out of my reach atm, but it will enevitably bring the price of the current line up down a few pounds
I agree it does point towards it being built for quick and efficient transfering of images, ideal for working press photographers.
As someone just starting out really keywording is so alien to me, does anyone know of any good resources that are worth a read?

Another feature on the new D4 is direct WiFi, meaning that with the built in key wording function, also the ability to caption the images individually in-camera, and direct WiFi, you can upload at a hot spot without the need for a computer, or having to transfer your images before upload. This is hugely important for a photojournalist covering breaking news events, and sports, as time is everything in those arenas.
This is a company that designed the new D4 around what is needed, not like some companies that design around cute, or load on the features mentality, without finding out what the users need, and want. Nikon worked directly with the users in designing the new D4. Kind of like how Demotix worked with the contributors in designing the new software uploading page.
Now I'm waiting to see what they do with the new D800 (more in my budget range), when it is released sometime this year (hopefully).

Chris: thanks for flagging it up. Seems to be a bit more of it about since the new year. We're switching to a new hosting provider this month and will be switching over to using their spam system soon.
I'm not sure about your other comments, though: one of the best things about online forums (about all kinds of topics) for me has been the ability for newbies to benefit from the cumulative wisdom of those more experienced than them.
Obviously we don't need a forum full of people asking "What R Best Lenzes lol?!??" but the answer to that isn't locking it right down to a private treehouse.

give the newbies a forum section of their own (that the rest of us can post to to help them ) but let them earn access to the rest.
This will mean that they will strive to do better and gain access
We don't get a lot of bogus and anonymous members
Also you should only get spam in one section of the forum.
It is a never ending job
BTW can I interest you in some double glazing, used cars, replica watches and some "performance enhancing" substances?

Hi Tom, there is really no harm asking what is the best lens, as long as the question is asked sensibly: anyway now that you ask: nikon's 18-200mm f3.5, a decent f1.4 say 28mm-30mm or 50mm and my new Tamron 70-200 f2.8 (hey I'm a poor guy) is slow on focusing but great on glass. As for "the answer to that isn't locking it right down to a private treehouse." The issue here is to make sure that those who want to contribute to the forum are not hindered by time wasters. best Lawrence

SO lawrence we have to keep out the time wasters. If that means those who want to contribute need to go though an apprenticeship of restricted access until they have 10 stories and a full profile so be it.
It is either fully open as now with lots of spam and many of our posts going to the spam bin or we put some restrictions on getting in.

Chris, but as you say if one is not anonymous it should cut down on the real spam. I work on the assumption that those who are serious about Demotix wouldn't do anything to jeopardize their reputation and activities on Demotix. And I still think 25 stories is a more appropriate number of stories for a press card; and those who need a press card and don't have the number of stories can always ask for one by making a case to Demotix. Lawrence 10 is find. However not everyone wants or needs a press card
However saying 10 stories and a full profile before you get into the main area of the forum will weed out most of the spam and stop people who sign up just to rant at a particular person or story but let beginners get help from the others.
