Non Exclusive content...

I would like some advice and be grateful if anyone can help... I gather images can be uploaded to Demotix on an exclusive and non exclusive basis.... I do not see where this option is, yet presume by default images are uploaded on a non exclusive basis leaving one free to also contact picture desks independently. Further to this if images are then pushed from Demotix to Corbis - what is there to prevent us uploading images to Corbis directly and hence not losing 50% of any licensing fee... These are basic questions but as someone who is just starting a career in this area, I want to make sure i am following the best procedures to help as much as possible in the super challenge of trying to make a living in this game....

There isn't an option to upload content and mark it as "exclusive" from the get-go since (saleable) exclusive content is actually quite rare.

We generally accept work as an exclusive if the reporter gets in touch with us first (by phone or email) and lets us know about the lead s/he's following up. Since news rarely stays exclusive for long, this means that we can be prepared to push the story out as soon as it comes in, as well as preparing the ground with our clients for the exclusive photos. There's a balance to be struck when deciding whether your images should be marketed as an exclusive as well - you may actually be diminishing your chances of selling them, as exclusives carry a higher price tag and hence more risk for the publisher.

By default, images are certainly non-exclusive - our Terms of Business state that you retain the copyright to your images at all times, only granting us a license to market them for you - meaning that you can do whatever else you want with them. However, we have a long-established relationship with the picture desks at all the UK nationals and a large number of other publications all over the world, so unless you have significant established relationships you're unlikely to do better than us. One of the purposes of Demotix is that we take all the tedious work of getting your photos in front of picture editors (and the follow-up, like chasing payments and recording usage) out of your hands, so you don't have to worry about it.

It would be lovely if you could upload to Corbis directly, but they only employ a quite limited pool of full-time professionals. You're welcome to apply, but I imagine that competition is quite stiff for the very limited number of positions. Uploading to Demotix is the easiest way to get your (quality) photos into the Corbis archive.

Hope that helps, and keep asking questions if you're not 100% clear.
