Track "lost" photos and cameras

The website below searches for metadata in images. As long as Demotix (or any other picture library) or your self when posting on line leave the camera's serial number embedded in the image you can track the images if they appear on the Internet. This means you can track when your pictures are put up on some else's web site.

More to the point should your camera get lost/stolen etc and some one then posts images taken with your camera on line they will show up. Which means you will know who is now using your camera.... (as discussed else where anyone who posts anything on line is findable one way or the other)

It is not foolproof not is it comprehensive but it is a start. It will also do the same for laptops and smart phones.

Just tried this with mine, it found one of my cameras and gave me links to only my flickr page but the other one gave no returns.

Could be very useful indeed thanks for posting the link!

This does look quite interesting. At Demotix we actually strip all this data out before we publish an image, in part, to help protect our photographers.

From their FAQ, they only search the popular photo sharing websites (Flickr etc), but even still it does sound like a handy tool.

Here at Demotix we've also been playing with google search by image : http://images.google.com/

Just click the little camera icon in the search bar, and upload (or link to) one of your photos, to see all the places around the world its been used. Great for tracking usage. We are looking at integrating something like this into our photo pages to help our sales team (and you) track usage.

Anyone posting pictures in the UK... or for that matter anyone who has pictures that are used in the UK (including Demotix staff) need to read this.

There is a need to have meta data in images. Given the changes in the law the serial number of the camera used to take the image would be a very good thing to keep in.

Chris this is certainly an interesting topic and ties up nicely with your other discussion:

NEW laws in UK for copyright on images
http://www.demotix.com/forum/new-laws-uk-copyright-images

In the meantime may I add another site as well:

Image Error Level Analyser
http://errorlevelanalysis.com/

This is a site where photos can be analysed for manipulation, i.e. how much a photo has been altered using editing software. Very easy to use, but as the owners of the site point out one needs to know how to interpret the results before claiming anything.

This is for Alex: will you be preparing a policy or guidelines document on these technical aspects in the same way Tom and Stephen are doing for safety and anonymity? Maybe including something about how to recover deleted images; an issue discussed in Staying safe during demonstrations?

Thanks and see you soon,

best

Lawrence
