Four people have been confirmed dead along with one individual missing after they were buried by rubble in a quarry near Mukangu village. Kenya, Africa. 01/02/2010.

The Kenya army servicemen are on the disaster scene digging in search of the remaining person who is feared dead.
The disaster hit yesterday, February 01, 2010 at around 11am East Africa time burying the five men who were excavating construction rocks in the quarry.

About 20 people who work in the quarry for a living escaped death narrowly. One of them said that they had gone for an early lunch when the tragedy occurred.

The quarry is a source of livelihood to scores of families around the area with some having worked there over 20 years.
An eye witness, Peter Kiaraho said that a small boulder had collapsed on Monday last week, but they did not take any precaution.

The Kenyan government has now ordered all the quarries in the area closed for environmental audit.
Environment minister John Michuki who visited the scene ordered all quarries to be inspected and a report to be given to him in one month's time.

He said despite quarries contributing to the country's economy, proper measures and audits have to be put in place to ensure safety. The National Environmental management Authority, Nema, also visited the scene.
