Located in Horn of Africa and in the northwest of its turbulent neighbour Somalia, the Republic of Somaliland declared its independence in 1991 after years of civil war with Mogadishu that had left tens of thousands of Somalis dead and countless more displaced abroad, mainly in the Middle East but also in Europe and North America.

Although boasting one of East Africa's fastest growing economies thanks to direct investment and money transfers from the Somali diaspora, Somaliland, which for all intents and purposes is fully sovereign and politically stable, remains unrecognised internationally with no representation in global bodies. Lack of international recognition has meant that the isolated republic is deprived of all international assistance and its economic potential severely stunted.
