On December 17, 2009 the Bondowoso District Government held The Areca Tree Climbing to also commemorate the Islamic New Year 1431 Hijri. The Areca tree was selected as a means of climbing competitions because of its height and is coated in grease to make it slippery. At the top of the ten metre trees are a selection of presents for the climber to choose from and the appeal of free gifts seems to outweigh the potential dangers face by each climber.
