The earthquakes of Sept/Oct '09 brought the world's attention to Padang in West Sumatra. The people living in the rural areas were the last to receive aid and attention. Pariaman, Indonesia, 03/10/2009.

Following the earthquakes which rocked West Sumatra on 30 September and 1 October 2009, the world's attention was focused on the city of Padang, closest to the epicenter. Located 80km north of Padang is the Regency of Padang Pariaman, which contains numerous villages clustered around the regional city of Pariaman. With approximately 80% of dwellings affected by the earthquakes, foreign NGOs eventually filtered in to provide medical and emergency aid.

The resilience of the rural population was evident during missions conducted into the various districts. Life was proceeding amidst the destruction and grief. Dignity was preserved and hope was always present. The fragility of human constructions was contrasted by the sustainability of the human condition.
