Members of the Takeda School of Horseback Archery demonstrate Yabusame, the most well-known and formal form of Japanese Horseback Archery. Tokyo, Japan. 02/11/2009.

The archery is very formal because it is performed at shrines and ceremonies. Minamoto no Yoritomo, who became the first leader of the Bushi society, was ordered to compile a formal Yabusame ceremony regulation book in the 12th century. The book was named 'Yabusame-shahou'.

The Takeda School of Horseback Archery (Takedaryu) has been maintaining the traditional Japanese horseback archery. The traditional Yabusame ceremony has been preserved and is still performed exactly as it was in ancient times.

The school follows the regulation and teachings established in the 12th century and provides a living example of Bushido (the way of the Samurai). Both male and female horseback archers undergo training and regular horseback archery demonstrations with full period clothing are carried out at various locations in Japan.
