Malaysian's opposition political party, PAS, held a couple of political rallies throughout Bukit Gantang Parliamentary area during the first night of campaign. Even heavy downpour did not deter hundreds from coming to rallies which atmosphere more like a carnival where traders sell snacks, drinks, children toys, garments and religious books.
At this particular meeting, four PAS strongmen led by Dato' Dr. Harun Din explained to a thousand plus supporters why they should vote for PAS candidate, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin and related national and local issues, mixed with crude jokes about BN candidate and his bosses at national level. The crowd loved every minute of it.
This by-election, together with Bukit Selambau and Batang Ai, are crucial to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, UNMO and BN political survival. BN victories will enable him to push for changes that he talked about during recent UMNO assembly. However, voters are already wary with those type of promises. They believed Pak Lah five years ago and it turned out to be nothing. Now Datuk Seri Najib really have uphill task to ask voters to trust BN again.
