Elementary school students hold pre-Christmas program despite the slow recovery of their school from the onslaught of typhoon Ondoy in September. One of their school buildings remains covered in mud. San Mateo, Philippines. 16/12/2009. Students of the Banaba Elementary School hold a singing and dance program for their pre-Christmas celebration. Wearing Santa’s hat, school children dance to the tune of “nobody, nobody but you”. The community was hard hit by the flash flood brought about by typhoon Ondoy last September 26 this year. One school building was submerged by the flash flood and still covered by mud. Despite the hardships in the recovery process the people are undergoing through in this place, the parents and the teachers came up with a simple program for the school graders. The program also signals the beginning of Christmas vacation for the students until the first week of January.

Victims begin to recover from the devastation caused by typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana). San Mateo, Rizal, Philippines. 30/09/2009 Victims of Typhoon Ondoy with international name Ketsana gradually rising above the tragedy. After 3 days, young and old alike seeks for possible remnants that could still be used for their recovery other than simply reminiscing their once simple lives. Filipinos at these times once again are tested of their being resilient. Like the image of a kid who found a car toy at the wreckage, people are hopeful to find another chance to rebuild their lives.

Aftermath of flash flooding caused by typhoon Ondoy. San Mateo, Rizal, Philippines. 27-30/09/2009 Manila, Philippines Photos were taken on September 27-30, 2009 at Barangays (villages) Banaba and Ampid, town of San Mateo, Province of Rizal.This is the next town upstream of Marikina River were devastation is relatively equate that of Marikina City. Gradually, the people are trying to recover from the tragedy. But it will not be easy for them especially those people who are still in the streets with out home to recover. Residence try to recover anything form the wreckage to start with. Electric services were already back but most of the areas still suffer from water supply. Water companies provided some free water distribution but there are areas still to be reach by its services. Staple foods are still the primary problem of the people. Most of them rely on the goodness of private individuals and organization for their relief. Government assistance is on the way but it is not enough. Waste disposal is becoming a problem too. Some of the areas are already smelling. Cause-oriented groups like Bayan Muna, Church-related groups and other non-governmental organizations try to augment the needs of the people by launching relief operations in the affected communities.
