With a pungent aroma of horse manure prevailing as heavy rain gave way to warm sunshine, the 700 year old Cahirmee Horse Fair took place on the 13th July in the town of Buttevant, Ireland.

Crowds of up to 20,000 people descended on the small North Cork town, for a day of buying and selling of horses, ponies, foals, donkeys, puppies, saddlery and other knick knacks.

The popular social gathering traditionally begins on the day before the town is officially closed to vehicles; the main street filled with traders and stock wandering loose amongst the crowd or ridden bareback and bridle less by teenagers and children.

Buttevant, formerly a 19th century British military town, is also the original home of the first ever steeplechase, held in 1752 from the town’s protestant church to Doneraile some 4.5 miles away. Local legend has it that Napoleon’s horse, Marengo, was bought at Cahirmee Fair in 1799 as was Wellington’s steed Copenhagen.

The annual summer event remains one of the few, and rapidly decreasing opportunities, to see one of rural Ireland’s oldest traditions of horse trading.
