Images of how the recession is affecting parts of Ireland, with shops closing for business and firms having to shut their doors. Inevitably unemployment is rising and Auctioneers signs are appearing along whole streets in a bid to get property sold or let. Drogheda, Ireland. 06/03/2010.

The impact of the Irish Recession becomes more visible with every passing day. Drogheda, Co.Louth is a town located approximately thirty kilometres north of Dublin. Only two years ago the town was in the middle of a building boom. Over a dozen residential developments grew around the edge of town with three multi million euro shopping centre's built within a 3 kilometre radius and two retail parks built within the same radius in the space of a couple of years. West Street the main street in the town is experiencing a period of unprecedented rapid decline. Auctioneers signs are clearly visible along the whole street advertising premises to let. At one point along the street there are six units in a row either for sale or for rent.
It is not only in retail that the effect of the recession is seen. Within half a kilometre of the town centre industrial estates are sharing the same fate. On the Donore Rd a demolition company work on a site occupied for almost thirty years by soft drinks company Coca Cola. The building which homed one of the largest single employers in the region is now reduced to rubble.
A town which in recent years experienced unprecedented development is now subject to unprecedented decline.
