LA NOTTE DELLA TARANTA: MELPIGNANO (LE) AUGUST 21-2008 The Salento is the lower part of Puglia region, south Italy. People there are very proud of their traditions such as dialect, the ancient language-”GRICO” and music “PIZZICA”. On summer season there are many folk music festivals, that gather lots of people, many from other regions . The most important of these is ' La notte della Taranta' which means the night of Taranta spider: in the old Salento tradition, the Taranta spider bites (pizzica) women working in the fieds and force them in to an obsessive dance. This dance is named 'Pizzica Salentina (of Salento)' which is a kind of Tarntella. Last year the 11th edition took place from 7th to 23th August 2008 In various villages of Salento; here are rapresented pictures from the final concert, directed by Mauro Pagani for the second successive year.More than 100.000 people were meeting in Melpignano near Lecce. The concerts presented some of the most representative groups of Salentine pizzica (Zoè, Alla Bua, Tamburellisti di Torrepaduli, Arakne Mediterranea, Uccio Aloisi Gruppu, Zimbarie, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Menamenamò, SalentOrkestra, Ninfa Giannuzzi, Antonio Castrignanò, Enza Pagliara, Anna Cinzia Villani) and several special projects which are the results of the collaboration among the traditional Salentine groups and musicians of other geographic and cultural origin.
