Every year, June 13th is a special day for several places and cities in Portugal. A very traditional feast to celebrate Saint Anthony's dead takes place at those towns that have Anthony of Lisbon (also known as Anthony of Padua) as patriarch.

Vila Nova de Famalicão is one of them. This small city situated in the North of Portugal is known to have the biggest northern Santo António festival. One week of cultural and traditional events enriches the city life and is waited the whole year by the local and surrounding inhabitants.

The peak of the week is the evening from June 12th to 13th where the traditional marchas (parades) where the different districts compete with each other through music, lyrics and choreographies, according to a theme. At the end of the parade, a tribune of VIP and jury evaluate the performance of each group i order to determine a winner. This folkloric procession is preceded by a parade of classic and antique automobiles. Afterwards huge and colourful fireworks fill the sky of colours and lights. The night goes on with music and dance until the sunrise.

The 13th is a local bank holiday and all families go to the centre of the town riding roller-coasters, playing traditional games, buying handmade items or eating local food (grilled sardines, pork, red wine) at the huge fancy-fair. The tradition wants each family to buy a vase of well-smelly basil containing a small peace of paper where a quatrain is written. This is the mainlines of this sort of Portuguese carnival, it's best to be seen rather to be read.
