A 19 year old man was injured today, 19 August 2009, during the last encierro (running of the bulls) at Leganes, Madrid. The man was hit by an oxen, and not a bull, as they were about to enter the bull ring.

As you can see from the photos, the most dangerous part was actually getting the young man out of the way from the on coming bulls and other runners.

This is a very dangerous location because both animals and runners at charging at full speed. Moreover, should a bull be distracted in such a situation it could easily attack those trying to help the person on the ground.

The injured man was taken to hospital, but he is not thought to have suffered any serious injuries.

Note: Oxen run with the bulls to give the bulls a sense of herd movement. They are not aggressive, unlike bulls, but are obviously very powerful beasts. Incidentally, bulls can become very dangerous if they get separated from the oxen. They become lost and frightened of the situation.
