Images of Wimbledon Stables, one of the few remaining places keeping the horse culture alive in the London urban area as many old mews, once hosting military and civilian stables, are turned into fashionable residential areas. London, UK. 31/10/2009.

London was once a horse-ruled city. As many old mews, once hosting military and civilian stables, are turned into fashionable residential areas, a few riding facilities remain active in the urban area to allow Londoners and tourists to go out on a hack.

Though the spot is far more famous for tennis - horses are still a common sight along the streets of Wimbledon, South London, where an old livery remains in activity. The Wimbledon Stables are still in the original location where they had been founded in the early 20th century, today a small yard the midst of houses and blocks of flats. Most of their riding is carried out on the Wimbledon Common, a few yards away from the stables, so groups of riders can still enjoy the odd pleasure of a short street hack to and from the common, among cars and taxis, aided by special horse-friendly traffic lights.
