On December 31, 2009, approximately 1000 protestors gathered at Erez Crossing, hoping to meet the Gaza Freedom Marchers who entered the strip to distribute aid as they walked through Erez Crossing. Even though the protestors knew that the Israeli border officials would not allow the marchers to pass through Erez, spirits were still high, and a peaceful protest emerged to memorialize those lost during Operation Cast Lead one year ago, and to call for the end of the blockade on Gaza.

The bulk of the protesters were Palestinians from within Israeli borders, supported by an international presence, as well as Israeli peace activists and refuseniks.

At around 14:30, Muslim protesters began a prayer. Israeli border police formed a line at the crossing gate to monitor all protesters. Shortly after the prayer, singing could be heard from within Gaza. The Gaza Freedom Marchers who were able to enter the strip had reached the Israeli border. However, they were denied entry into Israel.

On Monday, June 8, 2009, American and Israeli peace activists from CodePink and the Coalition of Women for Peace staged a protest at Erez Crossing, located at the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel. This protest was one in a series of demonstrations organized by CodePink to show solidarity with the people of Gaza.

CodePink was established by a group of American women in response to the Bush administration's desire to wage war in Iraq.

At approximately 11:00 am, CodePink members -- all dressed in pink -- started to gather at Erez. They chanted slogans and sang songs for peace, and eventually started to march towards Erez terminal. They carried with them items prohibited from entering Gaza: chocolate, concrete, light bulbs, tea leaves, candles, flour, paper, and matches.

Eventually, the border police intervened. The gates of Erez Crossing were shut and locked. CodePink members continued their chants, and performed a short skit at the gate. Before they left, they tied balloons and several prohibited items onto the gate.

The demonstrations will continue at the Gaza border, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Bil'in, Ni'lin, and Ma'asara throughout the week.
