British War Cemeteries are scattered throughout the Middle East from Egypt’s Al Alamein, through to Gaza, Jerusalem and Ramleh. During recent conflicts between Israel and Hamas, gravestones in the Gaza war cemetery have been damaged as result of rocket fire from both sides. Israel. 13/01/2010.

The brave soldiers of both great wars are resting in peace in a not so peaceful land; during the last war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas rockets fired from both sides landed in the British war cemetery in Gaza and damaged gravestones that still lay in ruins today one year later waiting to be repaired.

The writing on the gravestones in all the cemeteries I have visited tell the story of young, brave soldiers from all religions and countries who lost their lives in violent conflict. It seems humanity does not learn from its mistakes and history is repeating itself today in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as other countries around the world.

On one of these gravestones in Ramleh War cemetery I stumbled upon was a gravestone that has the name non other than Private Harry Potter who was killed in action in the city of Hebron in 1939.

British, German, Turkish, Greek, Polish, Czech and Indian nationalities, all fought each other and to ultimately now rest side by side.
