Travel to the Center of the World San Diego, Ca.-Hugh Smith It may sound outlandish and expensive, traveling to the Center of the Earth, but it’s official center is just off the Interstate 8 in Southern California just west of the Arizona border. You can browse through the “official” pyramid (heck it is in the desert), shop through the official store and read the history timeline written in stone. The Center of the World has its own address (One Center of the World Drive, Felicity, Ca.) and its own official Post Office and you can take home an official certificate for having stood at the Center of the World. Drive just west of the border between Arizona and southern California, and stop in the Sonoran Desert -- one of the hottest and driest places in the U.S. It was founded by Jacques-Andre Istel in the 1950’s and he somehow convinced Imperial County to establish the area as the official Center of the World and name the town after his wife Felicia Lee, hence Felicity. Incidentally, the Center of the World is only open from December through March. (Who knew)? I would suggest you call the Center of the World first. 760-572-0100
