The Salvation Army dedicated their new SAFES (Salvation Army Female Emergency Shelter) building at SW 2nd and Burnside, the former Harbor Light Building. Fairbridge will offer new growth and potential for this shelter that served 295 women in 2012.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited northwest Oregon as part of an environmental summit. As part of his visit he spoke to graduates of Maitripa College in S.E. Portland, after a huge public presentation at The Chiles Center of University of Portland.

Police took a 29 year old male into custody after he reportedly ran from a car and barricaded himself in a room at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in SW Portland. The standoff lasted four hours.

Just before 2pm officers responded to the Veteran Affairs Medical Center to a man with a knife who had barricaded himself into a room in one of the buildings. Officers from the Special Emergency Reaction Team responded.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue practice firefighting techniques in a home donated by Cedar Mill Bible Church. Veteran training officers lit fires insides and recruits went in to experience extinguishing techniques and the search for victims.

North Precinct Officers responded to reports of four smashed windows at the Nike Factory Store, located at 2650 Northeast MLK Jr. Boulevard. A witness reported that the suspect was a white male wearing all black clothing.

International and Longshore Warehouse Union workers continue to picket Columbia Grain at Terminal 5 Portland in the latest escalation of a labor dispute. The company, owned by Japanese trader Marubeni Corp claims workers were slowing operations.

A memorial was held for Kendra James who was killed on the Skidmore overpass 10 years ago by Officer Scott McCollister. Reverend LeRoy Hanes Jr says the case was a key to opening the movement towards bringing justice and police reform in Portland.

Hundreds of May Day protesters left O'Bryant Square for a permitted march in Portland to voice their anger over cuts to public services, ongoing attacks on people of color, and the right to organize and fight back.

A rally was held with several hundred people in O'Bryant Square to celebrate International workers' Day before a permitted march around the downtown area.
