Two prominent political opponents of the Cuban regime were placed under house arrest last week and prevented from participating in a protest commemorating ‘Resistance Day’ in Cuba.

Tomas Ramos Rodríguez and Emilio Leiva Pérez, former political prisoners, were detained in their homes in the early hours of 5th August by State Security forces.

According to Ramos Rodríguez, officials told him that the reason for his house arrest was that he was planning to participate in an activity considered by the authorities to be counterrevolutionary and provocative. Leiva Pérez meanwhile was eventually released at 10pm after being threatened by the political police.

Tomas Ramos Rodríguez is an opponent to the Communist regime led by the Castro Brothers, and has spent 30 years in Cuban jails. Emilio Leiva Pérez has served two sentences for anti-regime activities and directs the Frente Opositor Línea Dura organisation.
