Residents of Mexico City, government institutions and civilians, have collected over 780 tons of humanitarian aid for earthquake victims in Haiti. Mexico City, Mexico. 21/01/2010.

Until today, Thursday January 21, residents of Mexico City, government institutions and civilians, have collected 780 tons of humanitarian aid for earthquake victims in Haiti. That informed the holder of the Cuauhtémoc, Agustin Torres, along with Secretary of Civil Protection of the Federal District, Elias Miguel Moreno Brizuela.

In a brief press conference in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral, where there is a collection point for humanitarian aid that installed the city government, officials reported that the collection will be moved to the port of Veracruz and Navy ships will transfer the cargo from Mexico to Haiti. They noted that 20 employees of the Federal District are still doing rescue works, so far they have managed to rescue 17 people from the rubble.

Oscar Roa, director general of the Department of Prevention of Civil Protection, said he visited Haiti after the earthquake and said there are many similarities between the events in that country and the 1985 earthquake which caused severe affectations in Mexico. All officials praised the solidarity of the capital.

Next Saturday January 23 will close the collect organized by the government of Mexico City for the victims in Haiti. However, different organizations will continue sending aid through various institutions such as the Red Cross, the Haitian Embassy in Mexico, among others.

During the afternoon, dozens of people arrived in cars or on foot to deliver bottled water, medicine, blankets, canned food, in order to help those affected by the earthquake.
