US Army units have been in Wardak province, Afghanistan, since early this year as part of the 'surge' of Western troops against an increasingly successful Taleban-led insurgency. 

As part of the new US counter-insurgency strategy, troops in Wardak have been trying to protect the population from insurgent attacks and focus on building governance in the area cleared of the Taleben - so far with limited success.
