As South Africans head for the polls on this cold winters morning, voting at all the polling stations visited thus far has been very slow. There is a noticeable absence of last minute campaigning outside polling stations from all political parties except by the ANC. At one polling station in Mpopomeni, KZN, there was a nervous attempt by two COPE supporters to hang last minute posters on fences and lampposts outside an IEC polling station in an ANC stronghold. An IEC official requested a COPE poster be removed from the fence as it infringed on the Electoral Act. At St. Josephs Catholic Church in Howick, KZN, a DA Member of Parliament, Greg Krumbock, was asked to leave the polling station by the IEC representative and police after querying the right of voters to cast their votes at any polling station. According to Mr. Krumbock, the IEC officials were turning voters away from voting claiming they were not registered. However, after the heated discussion between Mr. Krumbock and the IEC official, voters were allowed to cast their vote at the polling station.

About 100 meters from one polling station in Mpopomeni, a group of ANC supporters made their views clear on COPE’s “hopeful” success in these elections. A makeshift coffin and tomb stone bearing photographs of Lekota and Dandala with the inscription, “C.O.P.E. R.I.P. Lekota + Mbeki + Dandala + other Foooools. Became the enemies of J.Z but only to last for four months. We are very very sorry to the family of the COPE that did not Cope. Try next time.” was positioned on the road verge for all to see en route to the polling station.

Whilst driving through the townships, one thing is evident, Politicians have spent millions of Rand on campaigning, promising housing, running water, jobs and less crime, but in reality, will those living in poverty only be rewarded with the discarded posters and election billboards from which to build their homes?
