258 Days on Strike - Ongoing Strike of Boliden Miners

![258th day of Boliden miner's confinement at the cathedral of Seville, where they had also been on a hunger strike for 32 days. The protest is caused by a failure of the Andalusia Government to keep their promise and relocate some of the discharged employees to a new location. Seville, Spain, 08/11/2009.
[EN] Over fifty ex employees from the former Boliden Mining Company occupied on the 11th of June 2009 the Cathedral of Seville, demanding from the Government of Andalusia to keep its word. It is a peaceful protest. The intention of the protesters was to arrange with Cardinal Archbishop Carlos Amigo Vallejo their indefinite confinement on cathedratic premises. They wished to stay in the Cathedral 'until a final solution is given to their case' - a clear, effective and a real one.
Their problem is no other but unemployment. Though caused by the current financial crisis in their particular case the trigger was the shutdown of Boliden deposit and the dismissal of some of them who had been apparently offered to be resettled to Egmasa, a mine maintained by a Swedish enterprise group, for restoration and cleaning tasks after having been discharged.
For years they have been locked as their problem resolution was being delayed and tired of failed negotiations with the Andalusia government, Juan Jose Fernandez - the spokesman of the group - explains, calling the former president of the Andalusia and now vice president Manuel Chaves a 'liar': 'The Government assured at the last meeting held in May, 44 jobs, at Las Cruces mine, that never became a reality'. Today it is the 258th day of their confinement at the cathedral, where they had also been on a hunger strike for 32 days.
[ES] Más de medio centenar de ex mineros de la extinta empresa Boliden tomaron el 11 de Junio de este año, la Catedral, para reclamar a la Junta de Andalucía que cumpla su palabra. Se trataba de una protesta de carácter pacífico. La intención de este colectivo -al que no paran de sumarse antiguos compañeros de la mina- era hablar con el cardenal arzobispo Carlos Amigo Vallejo para dar carácter indefinido a su encierro. Quierían quedarse en la Catedral 'hasta que se nos dé una solución al problema'. Una solución, claro, efectiva y real.
Su problema no es otro que el desempleo. En su caso, no provocado por la crisis financiera actual sino por el cierre del yacimiento de Boliden y el despido de algunos de ellos que habían sido recolocados en Egmasa para realizar labores de restauración y limpieza tras el vertido de la mina de Aznalcóllar gestionada por el grupo sueco.
Los encerrados llevan años arrastrando el problema y están cansados de los incumplimientos del Gobierno andaluz, según explican. Así, el portavoz de los ex mineros, Juan José Fernández, no duda en tachar al anterior presidente de la Junta de Andalucía y ahora vicepresidente Manuel Chaves de 'embustero'. Éste les garantizó en la última reunión mantenida, en mayo, 44 empleos, que, a fecha de hoy, siguen sin ser reales.
Al parecer, los puestos de trabajo a los que se refería Chaves les llegarían a través de Mina Las Cruces, empresa que, en un encuentro con los ex trabajadores, negó rotundamente.
Por todo ello, los ex mineros, que ya estuvieron encerrados en la Catedral en 2007 por el mismo motivo, llevan años movilizadándose. De hecho, hoy cumplen 258 días acampados en la catedral.
