A day of protests, marred by sporadic violent clashes between protesters and police, ended Monday night with dozens of Molotov cocktails being hurled at police from in front of the Etnico Metsovio Polytechnio university on Oktovriou street in central Athens. Athens, Greece. 07/12/2009. 

Central Athens has been gripped by protests since Sunday, the one year anniversary of Alexandros Grigoropoulos' killing by police in 2008.  Several thousand students peacefully marched through down-town Athens on Monday afternoon ending their march at the Polytechnio. Using the law of asylum, which barrs police from entering onto university grounds, anarchists repeatedly threw stones and Molotov cocktails at police who were keeping their distance but who would occasionally charge and drive protesters back into the safety of the university campus.

The demonstration was largely peaceful, however, using  the large crowd as cover, some demonstrators hurled stones and bottles at police who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.  Athens, Greece.  07/12/2009.

Several thousand people gathered in downtown Athens on the anniversary of the shooting death of 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos who was shot by police in 2008.  The protest, which began peacefully turned violent as protesters hurled insults and stones at the police who responded with tear gas and stun-grenades.  As night fell, scattered groups of rioters vandalized city property and continued to taunt the police.  Athens, Greece. 06/12/2009
