Venice Beach, California, 08/23/2009
Diana Hughes

Perfectly normal in Europe and yet almost unheard of in the United States, bare breast were the topic at Venice Beach, Ca and all across the United States on beaches in Hawaii, Oregon, California, Florida and New York.

Venice, Ca used to be a famous nude beach in the 1970’s but eventually banned nudity, now requiring women to “cover up” their nipples. Today the demonstrating topless women remained within the law by covering up their nipples with “pasties” that looked like nipples.

As European beaches increasingly tolerate topless women, and sell topless versions of the bikini the so called “mono-kini” in various stores, Americans seem to be stuck in the dark ages.

As a woman of the 1800’s it was considered improper to show off one’s ankles. It was also illegal for a woman to vote. Yes, Americans have come a long way since then. We now have laws that prohibit inequality between men and women and laws that protect us against racial profiling. According to the organization www.Gotopless.org there should be no discrimination between a man and a woman to be able to go topless at a public beach.

The dichotomy of American freedom is obvious; we must free ourselves from the restrictions of our outdated mindset and embrace the freedom of the wind and sea to caress our bodies.
