A group of over 50 tea ladies marched from Parliament Square to Trafalgar Square to promote the 'Strictly Fairtrade Tea Dance', one of the 'Fairtrade Fortnight' events. London, UK. 25/02/2010.

Over 50 tea ladies, with the exception of a few men, marched from Parliament Square to Trafalgar Square this morning. The message was clear, 'Britain swap your cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa.' The main aim of the march was to publicise the 'Strictly Fairtrade Tea Dance' which will be held on Saturday 27th February at Spitalfields Market in the East End from 12 noon until 5 pm. This is just one facet of many events organised throughout 'Fairtrade Fortnight' which began on February 22nd and ends on March 7th.

According to a recent poll Brits drink 165 million cups of tea a day in the UK. Only 10% of this figure relates to Fairtrade tea products. As a result campaign groups such as the Fairtrade Foundation seek to increase the general fair trade consumption in Britain so that the farmers who work the land, their families and communities get to see more profits ensuring them greater success for the future.

It should be noted that 'Fairtrade' is used to describe the certification and labeling system used in the UK by the Fairtrade Foundation. Fair Trade on the other hand is a more widespread term relating to the movement as a whole, whether labelled or unlabeled goods, produced through Alternative Trade Organisations (ATO's).
