ABOUT THE ELECTIONS
Iran's 10th presidential election were held in Iran on 12 June 2009.
The Islamic Republic News Agency announced that the election was won by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the incumbent, with 66% of the votes cast; Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who held the office of Prime Minister before its abolition in 1989, was said to have received 33% of votes. Both men have claimed victory, with Mousavi claiming widespread electoral irregularities.
The result has led to protests and counter-demonstrations in Tehran, prompting some commentators to suggest that the unrest is Iran's biggest political crisis since the 1979 revolution.
