Barriers in Parliament Square taken down - London

Put up 18 months ago to stop peace protestors camping in Parliament Square, the barriers protecting the grass have finally been removed. The grass is some of the most heavily policed in the UK. Londoners soon took the opportunity to play in the snow.

Imagine this.

A government, and a mayor, even if a clown, democratically elected, puts up heavy metal barriers around a patch of grass, a third of an acre in old measure, outside of its parliament, to stop protests against war. Against bombs dropped from a thousand feet, by young British white men, to land on the heads of children. Their parents their friends. Civilians all. Crimes still outlawed. By all holy books and the international laws of men. Blessed are the fence makers.

And the saintly Brian Haw shouted, daily for 10 years, at the law breakers without offending a blade of grass.

In Egypt this scratch of lawn is known as Liberation Square.

In London, outside the mother of parliaments it's a health and safety issue.

The barriers have gone.
The law has been changed.

We can stand on the grass once again.
We can not campaign.

Shame on us. Shame on me. And shame on those who care more for grass than ideas.
