July 13 marked the opening ceremony of the Maccabiah games in Ramat Gan Israel. The games are a Jewish athletic event similar to the Olympics.
The Maccabiah is held in Israel every four years under the auspices of the Maccabi Federation. Although primarily for Jewish athletes, Arab Israelis can also participate. It is sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee and World Federation of Sports. The Maccabiah Games is one of the five largest sporting events in the world by participation, and is considered a Regional Games by the International Olympic Committee.
The American swimmer Jason Lezak received the honour of lighting the torch for the 18th Maccabiah Games, during the opening ceremony in Ramat-Gan stadium.
