State contractors work on rebuilding the elevator at the 168 year-old now vacated Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City Missouri. The prison originally constructed in 1836 was closed in 2004 when the new modern Jefferson City Correctional Center was constructed.

According to Paul Ferguson, owner of Fercon Construction, some portions of the now defunct prison will be torn down such as the school and church. A second phase of the prison’s renovation will feature “restaurants in cells where prisoners where originally housed,” Ferlon added.
