To mark the 2,600th anniversary of Lord Buddha's Enlightenment, a vast gathering of monks at Ratchaprasong Intersection received alms in a two-hour early morning ceremony. Donations were sent to the needy in the troubled far south of Thailand.
This ceremony, presided over by the Most Venerable Phra Dhammakittiwong, formed part of the Alms-Offering to One Million Monks Nationwide Project which has been underway since 2008. It was the fourth of six alms-giving ceremonies this month, by the end of which the target should have been reached.
Gatherings at nearby Siam Paragon and Pratunam Centre were also included in today's ceremony.
After a preliminary address and chanting, 22,600 monks slowly filed along the lines of seated and kneeling men, women and children who offered them alms. It made an impressive spectacle along Ratchadami Road in front of Central World Department Store.
The alms, mainly dry food packages, will be transported to those in need in the far south of Thailand where religious and political unrest have caused many problems.
