Prior to that, nearly 200 Earth Hour participants had gathered outside Grand City Mall Surabaya for the first ever '60+ Surabaya' human formation on Saturday night, driving home the message of going beyond switching off the lights for 60 minutes. The lights off since 20.30-21.30 Indonesia Time.
Wearing 60+ t-shirts, and armed with candle lights, these participants are just part of the estimated 1000 strong crowd that came together to celebrate Indonesia Earth Hour 60+ this year. Government and grassroots organisations also took their own initiative by organising their own Earth Hour in this places.
Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative in partnership with WWF and is often dubbed the 'World's largest campaign for the planet'. On Saturday night, Surabaya joins with more than 5200 cities and some 149 countries worldwide in this global event that started in Sydney six years ago.
This year glaobal theme is "Dare the World to save the Planet". Because we have only one planet and we have to protect it. "I Will If You Will" is a simple promise and a challenge. Dare anyone to accept our challenge and help protect the Earth or accept the challenge of someone else.
Grand city Mall also have it's theme : “Go Beyond The Hour. We Can. We Will. Will You? Means an invitation or a challenge to society to do something positive, associated with an environmentally friendly lifestyle, in a certain quantity, and if met, the challenger will perform as promised spoken.
This event also done some action or performance that is expected to strengthen support for Earth Hour movement, including Flash Mob (mass dance) from Unair, Snack Market, Percussion, Papua dance, acoustic music with a special instrument of waste material, the appearance of art Capoeira from Brazil, the theatrical action of Unesa & Unair community, parkour, BMX Free Style.
East Java Governor, Soekarwo and Piyu Padi, as WWF Indonesia Ambassador led to switch off the light this Saturday night.
