NATO Game Over is a direct non-violent civil disobedience. The activists commit a small crime and to prevent a greater war crime. Hundreds of activists tried to enter the headquarters of NATO in Brussels.
This April 1, hundreds of activists for peace more than ten European countries are moving towards the NATO Headquarters in Evere. They will close the headquarters of the Alliance by intervening nonviolently.
Where peace is at stake, the nonviolent intervention is necessary. A military alliance like NATO, which operates worldwide, which has nuclear weapons and is ready to use them first, is a danger to world peace.
On May 20 and 21, the heads of states and governments will gather in Chicago to determine the role of NATO in its military interventions outside the territory of the Alliance and the role of nuclear weapons within the organization.
A civil disobedience action
"NATO GAME OVER is first a direct non-violent civil disobedience. We commit a small crime and to prevent a greater war crime. We are well supported by international law.
Hundreds of activists, organized response teams will spend the enclosure and will return the field headquarters of NATO in order to close buildings, doors and main entrances.
A support area
Meanwhile, outside the main entrance of NATO, hundreds of other citizens support the response teams returning to the area of NATO.
Our Belgian Defence policy is largely defined by our membership in NATO, we ask:
The judgment of the policy of military intervention
In Chicago, the Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen wants to give priority to building a system of military interventions. After more than ten years of war, the Afghan quagmire shows us how this idea failed. In Libya, NATO has exceeded the UN resolution and used the 'responsibility to protect' as an excuse for regime change. A year later, NATO leaves a country fragmented and dominated by armed militias.
The end of nuclear weapons
The sticking point of the summit agenda of Chicago's defense policy and NATO's strategic deterrence. In Chicago, the NATO countries must agree to the role of the 200 U.S. tactical nuclear weapons that are currently stationed in five European countries. They do not seem inclined to change their policy. However, tactical nuclear weapons have no military utility and there is broad public and political support for their withdrawal. In Chicago, we'll see if NATO hopes to get rid of the outdated ideology of the Cold War. Holding the current nuclear strategy is cons-productive to the process of non-proliferation.
The arrested development of the missile shield
Our representatives in NATO approved the development of missile defense and agree that the member states of the European Union pay the price, without any public debate. The investment of hundreds of millions of euros in anti-missile shield, only revive global arms race.
NATO GAME OVER
The action of this first part of the April NATO GAME OVER campaign conducted by Action for Peace and Vrdesactie. With this campaign, Peace Action calls for a real democratic debate on the role of NATO, which is absent today. It also aims to change the view of our government as we approach the top of Chicago's 20 and 21 May.
We do not want the missile shield nor NATO interventions in Libya or Afghanistan, or nuclear weapons illegal and dangerous.
NATO creates more problems than it solves, it is time to stop the belligerent strategy of NATO."
