Children participated in an Anzac Day commemoration service, on a day which marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War during the landings at Gallipoli in Turkey.
Anzac Day originally honoured those members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli, then part of the Ottoman Empire, during World War I, but now more broadly commemorates all those who served and died in military operations for their countries. Anzac Day is officially observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn, and Tonga, and services are held in many places around the world where Australian and/or New Zealand troops fought in past wars.
