Occupy London supporters kicked off a day of action on May Day with 'Occupy the Tube', an event that saw over 1,000 flowers handed out to commuters, as well an appearance by their floating protest tent, a symbol of their continued struggle.
May Day is recognized as an international day of celebration, in which workers express their solidarity and celebrate the successes they have achieved through their struggles. Occupy London began their participation in May Day with an action aptly titled 'Occupy the Tube.' Promptly at 8:30 am activists arrived en masse trailing their floating tent. As a symbol of their eviction from the site of St. Paul's Cathedral, and the banning of camping in the City of London, they toured Liverpool Street Station with a tent above them filled with helium balloons. They tents may no longer be on the pavement surrounding London's famed Cathedral, but that does not stop Occupy London's spirit nor it's continued protest against economic, political, social, civil, and environmental injustice.
May Day saw over 1000 flowers handed out to commuters who were genuinely pleased and thrilled to receive this small thoughtful gesture. Cards on the flowers read 'This flower is a May Day gift from Occupy London. Please put it in water and enjoy it. There is something better out there.' Occupy London hoped that besides the smile they would have from sharing a flower on their desk for the day, perhaps the message of this special day and all its meant for workers everywhere would stay with them. May Day is the start of Occupy May, a month of global protest that will see actions on May 12, the anniversary of the Indignados in Spain, and May 15, the largest general strike the world has ever seen. Other actions will include May 18-19 at the G8 summit, and May 20-21 at the NATO summit, both in the United States, the former moved to an isolate and protected military base called Camp David due to fear of protests.
I'd like to add, there were at least 4-5 times the number of police as activists, who brought a floating tent and a thousand flowers. Before the protestors arrived, the police were serious, and on high alert. Once activists arrived together, they relaxed, and enjoyed themselves. Many took flowers and wore them on their lapels. It should be noted the police are protesting on May 10th in London.
