Demonstrators particpate in "Blockupy" actions - Frankfurt
A broad alliance of different groups organize several emonstrations and campaigns agains the financial crisis politics of the European Central Bank (ECB), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and EU-Comission.
From 17th till 19th of May, a broad alliance of different groups and networks wanted to organize several demonstrations and campaigns agains the financial crisis politics of the European Central Bank (ECB), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Comission in Frankfurt / Main, Germany, domicile of the ECB.
The administration of Frankfurt banned, in an unprecedented manner, all demonstrations in the entire city for three days, except a mass demonstration on Saturday. Freedom of assembly is a fundamental constitutional right of the German Basic Law. The ban was confirmed by court. Thereupon people still claimed freedom of assembly. Police tried to prevent any activity.
For four days, the Frankfurt city center was affected by massive police presence, identity checks and road blocks. In contrast, allmost all activities remained peaceful. The goal of "Blockupy", to block the ECB, was reached - by massive police blocking the financial district and major parts of the city.
