People marched in downtown Phoenix to honor slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk. Milk, who was killed while serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978, has come to symbolize gay pride and power in the U.S.

In addition to Harvey Milk, San Francisco mayor George Moscone was murdered by former city employee Dan White. Harvey Milk was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2009.
