Cyclists, naturists and environmentalists converged on Portsmouth for the 2012 Portsmouth World Naked Bike Ride against the overindulgence of oil use. The ride was "Bare as you dare" with many taking advantage of the 25C heat to ride totally naked.
With Portsmouth baking in a mini heat wave many people took advantage of the sunshine and headed for the beach. Another group of individuals decided to take to the road for a leisurely cycle through the city streets. The main difference between the two groups was that the cyclists were wearing significantly less clothing.
The World Naked Bike Ride hit portsmouth with perfect weather and good humour from both cyclists and bystanders. The aim of the event is to protest against the global reliance on oil products and to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists on the road. Judging by the reactions of bystanders and sunbathers it is not an event that will soon be forgotten, and one that definately got its message across.
The route took in six miles of seafront and city streets and saw many members of the public cheering the riders on and applauding them as they passed by. The reactions of bystanders ranged from hysterical laughter to mild surprise, but nobody seemed offended. Only one protester was seen on the seafront holding a banner proclaiming "Shame on you".
