August 23, 2009 - Venice, Ca. Hugh Smith
The men and women of Venice Beach gathered to support the right of women to freely go topless. Organizers made latex nipple covers to “hide their indecent nipples” although the covers look exactly like…nipples.
Rael, spiritual leader and founder of www.goTopless.org states: "as long as men can be topless, constitutionally women should have the same right, or men should also be forced to wear something hiding their chest."
The event is part of other protests scheduled across the U.S on the same Sunday from Hawaii to Florida.
Venice Beach in the 1970’s was a nude beach. But, laws preventing women going topless were enacted ostensibly to protect children and families from displays of nudity and indecency. Today, demonstrators, both men and women bared their tops in opposition to the law forbidding women to be seen on the beach topless. Gotopless.org believes this to be hypocritical and unconstitutional.
The march began at noon and commenced at the beat of drums and marched on Ocean Front Walk to “muscle beach.” Entertainment included bands, singers, dancers and comedians.
There was no cover charge.
